Another Pill to the Rescue

Posted on August 11, 2008

Researchers have found that alpha-lipoic acid, a dietary supplement, may be able to stop the tendency in dieters to regain weight after going off their diets. This study, published recently in the journal Mechanisms of Aging and Development, was done on rats, and some researchers are unsure if the findings can be applied to humans.

Here’s what the leader of the study had to say: “Although weight does rise when you come off the restricted diet, if you take alpha-lipoic acid, even though you are eating normally again, you still have reduced weight.” He continued, “It seems that alpha-lipoic acid fools the body into behaving as if it was still on whatever diet it was following before the supplement was added” (source here).

Here’s an idea: instead of depending on a pill/supplement to help you maintain your weight loss, why not create good eating and exercise habits? In my opinion, that is going to be the best thing for you. That is how you will lose weight the healthy way, and that is how you will keep it off. “Dieting” for awhile, and then returning to your old ways of unhealthy eating will not work. Most people after “dieting” gain the weight back, and even some extra pounds on top of that. It takes healthy lifestyle changes to lose the weight and keep it off.

Pills/supplements should never take the place of healthy lifestyle habits.

I agree completely. I’ve kept weight off for more than 15 years because of exercise and eating well. I’d love to know about any side effects, too. Many people don’t think about those at all. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
