National Weight Control Registry Findings
Posted on August 20, 2008
The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) was created in 1994 to identify and study the characteristics of those who have succeeded at long-term weight loss.
To be eligible to join the ongoing study, you must be at least 18 years old and have maintained at least a 30 pound weight loss for one year or longer. Right now, over 5,000 individuals are being tracked as part of the NWCR.
Here’s some interesting information collected from the participants of the study:
98% of participants report that they modified their food intake in some way to lose weight.
94% increased their physical activity (most frequently reported activity was walking).
78% eat breakfast every day.
75% weigh-in at least once a week.
90% exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day.
So these are people that have lost weight and kept it off. This is what they did and are doing to maintain it. To me, there’s nothing new or miraculous on that list. Most of us know how to get to a healthier weight if we need to. The problem is actually starting and sticking to it.
Every day I see/hear countless ads on TV, internet, newspaper, and radio promoting crazy weight loss/diet products promising “amazing, fast, safe” results. Want amazing results? See the above info and get going. We don’t need fancy, over-hyped products. We need to stick to the proven basics.
