Protect Yourself from Heart Disease
Posted on August 21, 2008
You can prevent heart disease and other chronic diseases in your life by living a healthier lifestyle. There’s no question about that. You can’t make yourself immune, but you can definitely reduce your risk.
Some risk factors for heart disease can’t be controlled. Those include age, sex, and family history. But just because you are at risk because of some of these doesn’t mean you can’t do anything.
Heart disease is bad news. It sad how many people suffer with it and die from it. Here are some things you can do to reduce your risk:
Avoid tobacco smoke. Smokers have a greater risk of developing heart disease than nonsmokers, but even nonsmokers are at a greater risk when exposed to other people’s smoke.
Keep blood pressure in check. High blood pressure increases the workload on the heart. When high blood pressure is coupled with obesity, smoking, or high cholesterol, the risk increases even more.
Be active. Inactivity is a risk for heart disease. Being more physically active can also help control weight, diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
Eat healthier. The food you eat can help you control other risk factors. It can help you get to or maintain a healthy weight. It can help control cholesterol and blood pressure. It can help you prevent diabetes.
There are many more healthy lifestyle changes we can make in addition to the ones mentioned above. Check out the American Heart Association website here to read more.
We should all be doing our best to prevent heart disease and other chronic diseases in our own lives and in the lives of those we love. These are just a few simple things we can do that will go along way on our quest for health and chronic disease prevention.
