Season Premiere of The Office
Posted on September 26, 2008
I’m a big fan of the TV show The Office. In last night’s season premiere, the office staff of Dunder Mifflin Scranton tries to win a weight loss contest developed by corporate. They compete against the other branches to see which branch can lose the most weight. The winning branch receives 5 extra days off.
What ensued wa
s, of course, a hilarious depiction of how some people try to lose weight. Some starve themselves, some go on crazy fad diets, some just ignore the challenge and some force the others to eat better. My favorite depictions of what people really do (or should do) in reality were the characters of Stanley Hudson and Kelly Kapoor. Stanley goes for the healthy way. Kelly tries other ways.
Stanley says that he is losing weight for his own reasons. He is shown taking the stairs, not eating cake at his birthday party, and doing simple exercises while he works at his desk. He said he realizes that he isn’t as healthy as he used to be and wants to do something about it.
Kelly, on the other hand, decides to do a crazy cleanse diet. A concoction of maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and water is all she can drink. As she mentions how good she will look in her new bikini she just bought online, she looks terrible. She can barely sit up and just looks messed up. Of course, later she passes out and has to go to the hospital to recover.
She wasn’t done yet, though. Later on, she says she swallowed a “tape worm” that eats all the food she eats so she will lose weight.
So which character are you? Are you a Stanley who decides to get healthier by making small, simple changes and is successful, or a Kelly, who tries every new (or old) fad in town so she can look good in her bikini?
Losing weight and getting healthier is a process that takes time. You can’t expect to change a lifetime of unhealtiness overnight. You can start now, and little by little, you will see the changes.
Last night’s episode was a good one, and I hope people realize that all those crazy weight loss miracle products don’t help you at all.
Small lifestyle changes will help you a lot more than any cleanse, detox, or miracle product. Eat healthier and move more.
