Aerobic Exercise and Your Brain
Posted on October 20, 2008

In the latest British Journal of Sports Medicine, Drs. Arthur F. Kramer and Kirk I. Erickson report that regular aerobic exercise can help reverse mental decline (Source here).
As part of their research, Kramer and Erickson conducted a 6-month study where adults aged 60-75 walked briskly for 45 minutes a day 3 days a week. These subjects performed better on tasks such as planning, scheduling, and multi-tasking than those adults in the control group who only did non-aerobic stretching and toning activiites.
Based on their research and other research already done, Kramer and Erickson suggest that regular aerobic exercise can “reliably reverse age-related cognitive decline.”
Here we have more reason to get active now. How many studies do we need done until we are motivated to get moving? We know exercise is good for us and we know it can help us live healthier for longer.
Bottom line: Exercise, in all its forms, is good for us. Get some.

Take care of your brain. Get regular exercise. http://tinyurl.com/5v23ok
So, exercise helps a growing mind learn more and better, and it helps an aging mind to stay sharp. Good motivation for us all to get moving a little more!

Good point… How MANY studies do we need to convince us?
Isn’t it too bad that our brains get in the way of making sure we do the things that are good for our bodies, AND our brains?

Another reason exercise is the closest we’ve got to a fountain of youth.
Study after study shows us that physical activity helps combat anxiety, depression, age related decline in cognition, concentration, etc…
With the leading edge of the boomers becoming seniors, maybe the health industry will start to move away from fitness programs designed to achieve a ’six-pack’ and towards programs designed for overall health (mental and physical) and longevity.
