An Artificial Heart

Posted on October 28, 2008

The leading cardiac surgeon in France has developed an artificial heart that beats almost exactly like a real heart.  The “Smart Heart” uses sensors to regulate heart rate and blood flow.  The new heart was described:

“If you show the graphs to a cardiac surgeon he will say it’s a human heart.  But no, it’s not a human heart, it’s the prothesis.”

The new heart has been tested successfully in sheep and calves and will undergo clinical trial in the next couple of years.  The developers are hoping to have it available for patient use in 2013.

I’m fascinated by advances in science and technology.  It’s amazing what can be done.  Although I’m not a fan of everything (exercise in a pill!), there are some good things being developed.

Ideally, we all would live healthy lifestyles and take great care of ourselves.  But when things happen beyond our control, a device that can help someone live a better life is, in my opinion, a good thing.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this “smart” heart.

Take care of your heart.  Eat healthy.  Get active.
