I am Not a Perfect Eater
Posted on October 6, 2008
Why is it that people are more concerned with what I eat than what they eat? Is it because they think I am a health nut? Is it because it’s easier for them to watch what I eat rather than what they are eating?
Yesterday we were invited over to my in-laws for dinner. During the week leading up to yesterday, my mother-in-law made a few comments about how sorry she was that the food she was making would be unhealthy and that she hoped I would be able to eat it.
My father-in-law made a similar comment by saying he hoped that the dinner/dessert didn’t ruin my “whole health regimen thing.” I kindly responded that I sometimes eat things that aren’t always healthy. It’s about moderation.
Here’s the point: To me, healthier eating is not about restricting everything you know is bad for you. In my experience, you’ll eat what you want anyway. It’s about creating good habits and eating healthy foods most of the time. The occasional treat is not going to kill me but the unhealthy eating on a regular basis will probably cause some problems.
I try to eat pretty healthy and get plenty of exercise, and I think I do ok. So when I go to dinner at my in-laws and we have loaded mashed potatoes, ham, and an awesome dessert of chocolate pudding cake, I’m not that worried.
*Side Note* The food was great.
A post from James Hubbard’s My Family Doctor Blog about Weight Loss and Sweets said it perfectly:
“Healthful eating is not perfect eating.”
Again, eating healthy is not about eating perfectly. It’s about consistently making good food choices.
So, am I worried about what I ate yesterday? Not at all. Because I’ve created good eating/exercise habits for myself, today I will be just fine.
