You Gotta Want It

Posted on October 15, 2008

Creating healthy habits can be hard.  In order to change our bad habits to good habits, we have to want to.  We have to have the willpower and determination to do it.

Of course it is hard at first.  But with time it gets easier and easier to stick with the healthy changes.

Everyday I read success stories of people changing their lives and changing their health.  They all have their own reasons for changing their lifestyles but they all make necessary changes to reach their goals.  All of us can be successful with our health goals too.

A lot of people know I try to be healthy.  In our normal conversations something about health will always come up.  I usually hear people say something like, “I just wish I had the time to take better care of myself” or “I wish I didn’t have all these cravings for unhealthy foods.  Then I could eat better.”

I always try to give an encouraging word, but as I’ve thought about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that people just don’t really want to change.  If they did, I think they would.

Eventually something “clicks” and they are motivated and ready to change.  Sometimes it’s something small that triggers the changes.  Other times it’s a heart attack, a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, or a stroke that makes them change.  Hopefully they are lucky enough to get a chance to change.  Some don’t get that second chance.

Sorry about the ramblings, but here’s my point: The desire to change has to come from within.  I can’t force those I love to change their ways.  All I can do is set a good example and encourage them.  They have to want it.

I want to be healthy and that is why I have tried to create good habits for myself.  When you really want to change, you can too.

I am the captain of my soul.”

You have discovered what took me years. People will not change habits until they are ready.

“The desire to change has to come from within”

    Too true.

There may be various metabolic reasons behind our bad habits – inactivity and over-eating, but until you are willing to put your money where your mouth is…noting is ever going to get better

    Another good post

Change comes from pain or pleasure….right? One must have the desire within. A very good one here!
