The Same Thing Again — Change

Posted on February 8, 2009

Well, I’m sitting here at the Tampa Airport waiting to fly back home to Utah.  Thought I’d crank out a quick thought.

Today for lunch I went to Subway and happened to meet a guy who has lost 80 pounds in the last 5 months.  He was still not quite to his goal and he’s determined to lose more and stay healthy.

He said it was either lose the weight or get on medications.  He didn’t want that.  He knew his lifestyle had created his health problems and knew medication was not the answer.

How did he lose the 80 pounds?  He made changes.

He created healthier eating habits for himself and started exercising a couple of times a week.  We didn’t speak long and I don’t know what he does for exercise, or anything else about his story.  But I do know that he made changes and now he’s better off for it.

If you’ve read my stuff before you know I talk about this all the time.  Small changes and better habits can go a long way.  I don’t know your story and I don’t know what your goals and dreams are.  I do know this, though:  When something clicks in your life and you are ready to go out and make something happen, or make a change in your life, you will.

I know I’m preaching to the choir.  If you’re reading this, you probably already have some good health habits.  You also know and love people who probably need to create better habits for themselves.  What can we do to help them?  Until they are ready to change, all we can do is set a great example.

Yeah, I know I’m not perfect either.  I have a long way to go to reach my goals, fitness and otherwise.  But I am making changes and keeping up with them.  I hope we all are.

I couldn’t agree more that its the little steps that make a huge impact.

I know too many women who, come January 1, make a laundry list of everything they are going to change THAT DAY and stick to for the rest of their lives.

They are just setting themselves up for failure!

And sadly I know women at work who will only eat 1000 calories a day, no matter that I tell them their body will go into starvation mode, and that they need more calories just to make the body work.

    Great post!

You’re not completely preaching to the choir. Right now, I’m still struggling to get out of the worst shape of my life. If I had a job where I was allowed to be on my feet, things would be SO much different.

I do agree with you that something has to click in your head. When it comes to such a thing as you health, it doesn’t pay to have a half hearted approach. I’ve lost weight before, and it was always due to a strong conviction.

80 lbs is quite an accomplishment! I’m always in awe of people who can make healthy changes after 20 or more years of doing things one way! Amazing.

Great stuff Blake! Small changes can have a large impact – it doesn’t have to be “all or nothing”…
