The Kids are Watching
Posted on March 23, 2009
Being a new dad is pretty cool. She’s 3 weeks old now and is even out-growing some of her clothes. My wife and I love to put her on her tummy and watch her try to move. She’s pretty strong and can hold her head up for a while until she gets tired and she also kicks her little legs like she’s trying to move. She wants to move and she looks frustrated that she can’t!
My wife and I are trying to set a good example to our little one on how to be active. We’ve taken her on walks (even though she just sleeps — see pic below), and we’re excited to take her to the pool and also on runs in her stroller. We want her to know that being active is a part of life. We want her to see us being active.
“What we find is that habits are built early, and so, rather than introducing them [kids] to fitness as something different, introduce it as a normal activity.”
– Dr. Tamara Lewis, Intermountain Healthcare’s medical director of community health and prevention, from here.
Kids learn from their parents. There’s no question about it. As parents, we should be creating good habits for ourselves so our kids can learn them from us. They are watching — when they’re not sleeping. :)
