B-Fit B-Day Challenge Report
Posted on May 18, 2009
So today is my bday. I’m getting to be pretty darn old — 27 years old to be exact. To celebrate and to show myself that I can accomplish something, I did the B-Fit B-Day Challenge. Didn’t do it on my bday though, easier to get it all in on a Saturday.
I heard about it on Twitter and thought it would be a good test for me. I have an Olympic-distance tri coming up in about a month so I figured, why not do the challenge.
The challenge works like this: take the first digit of the age your are turning x1000 and swim that distance in yards, bike the total age, and then run the second digit in the age you are turning. For me, it turned out to be swim 2000 yards, bike 27 miles, and run 7 miles. I did the gold version so I had to do everything within 24 hours.
I told my wife I was doing the challenge and she kind of looked at me like “Why?” but she understood and was supportive of it. I started off at 8am by heading to the rec center pool. I just treated the swim like any other workout. Just did a few 100s, 200s, and but mostly 300s to complete the distance. Felt pretty good after. Total swim time was about 40 mins. Not fast or anything but good enough.
I told the wife I’d watch the baby while she went running so off she went for a 3 mile run and me and the baby hung out. Got some food, wife came back, and I headed out on the bike.
My bike route is a loop so it can get pretty boring. I tried to take a pic while I was out there but my phone was full from all the pics of the baby. :)
After 1 hour 40 mins, 27 miles was complete. Again, pretty slow, but whatever. Just trying to finish and have something left in the tank for the 7 mile run.
After the bike I rested for at home for a bit. I stretched, got some food, gave baby a bath, then headed out for the last leg. This was by far the toughest part. Finished the run in 1 hour 6 mins, which is slower than I normally can go for that distance.
Didn’t matter to me, I was just glad to be done. Finished the challenge a little before 3 pm. I really should’ve treated the challenge as a tri and gone back-to-back-to-back, but I wanted to take my time and not get hurt.
Was a little sore Saturday night but Sunday and today I’ve been feeling good. Happy bday to me.
Remember, you’re never too old to get ready for the B-Fit B-Day Challenge. Start small and anyone can do it.
