Stress and Exercise Motivation
Posted on May 28, 2009
“I think our study suggests, more than anything, varying perceptions of exercise. Someone who isn’t regularly active may view exercise as ‘one more burden’ when stressed, whereas those who make it a part of daily life may view it as a stress reliever and an escape from pressure.”
– Rafer Lutz, Ph.D
This comes from a news release from the ACSM dated today, May 28, 2009. It’s interesting to me how this can go both ways… exercise, or the thought of it, could possibly create more stress if you’re not very active, and exercise can relieve stress if you do it regularly.
I guess the best thing to do would be to get regular exercise. That way we can have another stress reliever in our stress-fighting arsenal.
If you’re not regularly active, start today and be consistent.

I guess they just think in their mind that it is one more thing they have on the to-do list. I understand it too. I always try to force myself to workout when I am extremely stressed – and it really does help calm me down after my workout.

I really need to exercise. When I don’t exercise for a week I already get grumpy and get angry very quick.

Speaking as someone who went from very little exercise to exercising and lifting weights 5 times a week, that statement couldn’t be more true.
