Pre Race Notes
Posted on June 19, 2009

Tomorrow is race day. Gotta do just under 1 mile swim in Utah Lake, ride about 25 miles on the bike, then run a little over 6 miles.
I always get nervous before events, whether it be a 5k or any triathlon. I’ve only done this distance once (last year, same event) so I hope to improve my time this year.
Lot’s of stuff is going through my mind today. Have I trained enough. Did I rest enough. What if I flat. What if I have an asthma attack in the lake. What if I get a DNF. Blah blah blah. I guess I just have to trust that I’ve done enough of the right things, show up for the race, and just swim, bike, and run until I finish.
Last year I was scared to death of the lake swim, and it showed in my swim split. This year hopefully the nerves of being in the open water will be minimized and I can just get into a nice rhythm.
I love triathlons. For me, it’s just as much of a mental sport as a physical one. It’s also just a race against myself and my previous time. Sometimes it’s hard to think like that when you have people flying by you on the bike at what seems like 100mph, but it’s all good. I just gotta do my own thing.
There’s also no greater feeling than crossing the finish line knowing that you accomplished something pretty cool (I can only image what those finishing the Ironman feel). Feels good to have the time you put into training pay off with a finished race.
So those are my thoughts today. I’m sure I’ll be even more nervous before the start tomorrow. Wish me luck and to all those also racing this weekend: Good Luck and have a great race!
