Benefits vs. Risks of Triathlon

Posted on July 28, 2009

“When one considers that heart disease is THE likeliest thing to kill an American, it’s hard to see that an article would only highlight the risk of these sports. Improving one’s diet and engaging in cardiovascular exercises are the two primary ways of naturally and dramatically reducing the risk of heart disease.  I posit that the benefits FAR outweigh the risk.”

– Gabriel Anderson (via here) on the risks of participating in triathlons vs. the benefits.

    Hi Blake,
    I competed in one of triathlons mentioned in this article a couple of weeks ago – where a gentlemen did die during the swim. It was tragic, yet I believe that the sport of triathlons are very safe – and in the case in which I saw – the man who died had a heart condition that caused his trouble during the swim. And it was all handled very well.

    I am a big believer in how triathlons can help people to become healthy and live well.

    @Lance

    Thanks. Yeah, it is tragic when someone does have an accident during an event, but overall, triathlons are safe and a great way to stay active and healthy.

    The benefits in triathlons far outweigh the risks. It is still a very safe sport. People do not normally die doing a triathlon making it a very rare occurance.

    This seems like more of a sedentary person’s excuse for not working out.
