For Health

Posted on August 25, 2009

Yesterday I read a great article from Peter Janiszewski from Obesity Panacea called “How Time magazine got it wrong on exercise and weight loss.”  As you can probably guess from the title, he discusses how this article from Time was from way off.

Anyway, here’s an excerpt from Janiszewski:

“Individuals of all sizes and ages can vastly improve their health by becoming more active, even when their weight on the scale refuses to budge. Due to the prevailing focus on weight loss, the lack of weight change is too often interpreted as a treatment failure, leading to discontinuation of the healthy activity.”

This happens too much.  I’ve even heard relatives even say this.  “The scale didn’t move so I gave up.”  There’s more to health than weight.  If the scale isn’t moving, do something different, but don’t stop exercising and eating better.

This article written by Time Magazine was terrible. It basically told people that if they exercise then they won’t lose weight because exercise makes you hungry and you are more inclined to overeat and make poor food choices. I thought Time was a pretty reputable source of information until I read this article that was based on so many misconceptions and flawed studies. Anyone who has tried losing weight should know that exercise is only one part of the whole picture. Calorie control is the other. If you exercise like the dickens, but eat thousands of calories a day then no, you won’t lose weight. However, if you get regular exercise, restrict calorie consumption and eat a healthier diet then you will. Time magazine should be shamed for publishing such crap.
