In-School Workouts Help Kids Focus

Posted on March 2, 2010

Some excerpts from this article about how some schools in Canada have put in treadmills and stationary bikes in classrooms to help students focus:

“If I feel antsy during the day, or feel like misbehaving, I ask if I can use the treadmill or the bike.  I have so much energy built up in my body and I’m letting it out without being rude or obnoxious.”

– Altyn, 12, a student in the behavioural class at Etobicoke elementary school

“Some kids, I’m not kidding you, I could not get them to sit still for 15 minutes, and some of them were focused for four hours after doing this [exercise].”

– Allison Cameron, 8th grade teach who put treadmills in her classroom

Pretty cool stuff.  It turns out exercise is great medicine for a lot of things.  Read the complete article here

I have heard of corporations using treadmills as a means of geting employees more active – not just during a workout, but during conference calls and meetings. Trying this amongst youngsters at school is a terrific idea. Thanks for sharing.

@Melinda – Yeah, I thought this was great. Wish more schools and companies did stuff like this.

Just found your blog! It’s great. This is really a fantastic idea. I used to work for an organization that had random treadmills and ellipticals in different breakrooms – why not put them in schools, too? We need to refocus attention on giving our kids healthy lifestyles.
