Healthy Monday – Eat at Home

Posted on July 12, 2010

Each Monday, a simple health tip and challenge will be posted as part of Healthy Monday.  Healthy Monday is a public health initiative founded in 2005 in association with Johns Hopkins University, Syracuse University, and Columbia Univerisity.

Their mission includes ending “chronic preventable disease in the U.S. by offering people and organizations a weekly prompt to start and sustain healthy behaviors.”

“Prepared foods, no matter where they are sold, tend to be higher in calories, fat, saturated fat, salt and sugars and lower in fiber and some vitamins and minerals than in meals prepared at home.”

Marion Nestle, from What to Eat

The Tip: Most of us eat out.  A lot of us eat out more than we should.  The problem is that we usually have no idea what we’re eating when we eat out.  Tons of calories, sodium, and lots of other junk can be in whatever we’re eating, even if it seems like a healthy option.  Eating at home or bring foods prepared at home can help improve your eating habits.

By taking a little time to plan ahead, you can make an easy, delicious and healthy meal right from home.

The Challenge: Plan ahead and try and go one day this week with out eating out at all.  If that’s too easy make it two or three days, or even the whole week.  Challenge yourself.  Eat healthy foods and snacks prepared from home.

Let me know how it goes.

Have a healthy Monday and week!
